Okay, it’s becoming pretty evident that the Japanese film industry won’t rest until we’re all curled up in the fetal position crying our eyes out. There seems to be no end in sight for the recent wave of tearjerkers, and Shin Togashi’s Ano Sora wa Oboeteru is apparently the mother of them all. Based on the Janet Lee Carey novel “Wenny Has Wings”, the movie is about a happy family whose world is turned upside-down when an accident injures their son severely and kills their daughter.

Director Minoru Kawasaki (The World Sinks Except Japan, Executive Koala, The Calamari Wrestler) held a press conference yesterday for his upcoming kaiju parody The Monster X Strikes Back / Attack the G8 Summit (Girara no Gyakushuu / Toyako Summit Kiki Ippatsu). Attendees got an up-close look at the remarkably well-spoken Guilala, a monster who first appeared in the 1967 sci-fi movie Uchu Daikaiju Girara. Also in attendance was Akira Matsushita reprising his famous over-the-top impersonation of former Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.

I figured this was worth mentioning since it’s been quite a long time since SaruDama‘s last update, but they now have a new design and new reviews up for Retribution and Exte. It’s always nice to see other Japanese movie sites get back into the fray, and that one was always one of my favorites.

Fans of oddball vignette-style absurdity rejoice! The Viz Pictures release of Funky Forest: The First Contact now has a solid release date of March 18th and the Viz promotion machine is just starting to get its gears churning. Considering a Japanese import with English subtitles had already been freely available to the niche audience that really wanted to see it back in 06 (like me), it will be interesting to see if sales will be negatively impacted. Here’s hoping releases like this continue to broaden the fanbase of Japanese movies in the west and distributors won’t have to worry about competing with fansubbers and subtitled r2 releases.

The official website for Junji Sakamoto’s hardboiled revenge thriller Chameleon: Long Goodbye is now live. There isn’t much content yet but there is a 45 second teaser featuring a really scruffy Tatsuya Fujiwara standing around looking badass. Release is scheduled for this summer.
