Asmik Ace announces live-action adaptation of “Solanin” starring Aoi Miyazaki and Kengo Kora

While announcing their 2009-2010 lineup of films, Asmik Ace spilled the beans on a live-action adaptation of Inio Asano's Solanin. Solanin is considered a "seinen" manga because it's targeted for the 18-30 crowd. In keeping with the genre, the story of the manga is rather subdued and grounded in reality. Popular actress Aoi Miyazaki will play Meiko Inoue, an office lady who can't stand her job and becomes equally fed up with her home life. Her boyfriend, Taneda, will be played by actor Kengo Kora (Sad Vacation, Snakes and Earrings).

SolaninThe couple has been together since their college days, but life has gotten much harder since graduation. Recently, Taneda has been crashing at Inoue's place and slacking on the rent because his work as a freelance illustrator doesn't pay very well. Inoue begins to feel that she's just not cut out for the real world.

When Inoue makes the decision to quit her miserable dead-end job, Taneda is forced to actually put some effort into following through on his dream of becoming a professional musician. As he and his bandmates Rip and Kato shop their demo around, he starts to become more responsible for his own direction in life. The couple are generally supportive of each other, but their relationship is still strained, and they continue to quarrel about various day-to-day issues that crop up while stressing out about their uncertain future.

This will be the first feature length film for director Takahiro Miki, who previously directed videos for Orange Range and YUI. Shooting begins on April 25th with release planned for 2010.

Viz Media currently distributes the manga in North America. You can find it at Amazon.
