With Chris Nahon's live-action adaptation of Blood: The Last Vampire getting much-publicized releases in Japan and the UK, I suppose it was only a matter of time before a US release was announced. Well, now it's official; Sony Pictures has acquired the rights to release the film in the US.

Plot: From a Producer of Hero and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon comes BLOOD: THE LAST VAMPIRE, based on the cult hit series. Demons have infested the earth. And only one warrior stands between the dark and the light: Saya (Gianna Jun), a half-human, half-vampire samurai who preys on those who feast on human blood. Joining forces with the shadowy society known as the Council, Saya is dispatched to an American military base, where an intense series of swordfights leads her to the deadliest vampire of all. And now after 400 years, Saya's final hunt is about to begin. -- Sony Pictures

It's going to be a quick turnaround too -- Samuel Goldwyn Films will release Blood: The Last Vampire in theaters this summer. And in keeping with that whole quick theme, Sony has already launched an official website for the release, complete with a new trailer and lameass tagline.

This release reunites Sony Pictures with producer Bill Kong, who worked with them when Ang Lee's "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" got a much ballyhooed US release in 2000 that actually got people to not mind subtitles so much (for about a week). No subtitles here though. Gianna Jun honed her English skills before production began and -- as you can see from the trailer -- most, if not all the dialogue will be in English. Happy now, illiterates? Yeah, I said it.
