It was recently announced that 17-year-old actress Riko Narumi will star in a new film involving competitive "performance calligraphy".
On July 28, 2008, the NTV show "Zoom-In!! SUPER" aired an event called "Shodo Performance Koshien" which involved teams of high school girls using large brushes to draw characters on huge sheets of paper in the most entertaining, coordinated ways they could come up with. The event, which took place in Shikokuchuo, Ehime, got an impressive 10% viewership rating during its airing even though the segment was only 9 minutes long.
Ryuichi Inomata (A Tale of Mari and the Three Puppies) is set to direct the new film, which will begin shooting in Shikokuchuo in mid-January with release planned for May 2010. However, the title has not yet been announced. It will be revealed during the "Shodo Girls Koshien" portion of the Zoom-In!! New Year's Special.
