Makoto Shinozaki is in the midst of directing Tokyo-jima (Tokyo Island), starring Tae Kimura. The film is based on Natsuo Kirino’s novel of the same name which went on to win the highly coveted Tanizaki Prize in 2008.
Kimura will be playing Kiyoko, an ordinary 43-year-old housewife who’s suddenly thrust into an extraordinary situation as the only woman out of 24 people stranded on an otherwise uninhabited island. Seiji Fukushi, Tasuku Emoto, Ryo Kimura, and Shingo Tsurumi will also star.
Kirono’s novel depicts the extremes of human nature, so it stands to reason that Kimura’s role will be both physically and emotionally taxing. However, after offering up a gut-wrenching performance in Ryosuke Hashiguchi’s All Around Us that eventually netted her Best Actress at the 2009 Japanese Academy Awards, she’s more than established her considerable acting chops.
Filming of “Tokyo Island” began on October 11th on the islands of Okinoerabu and Tokuno in Kagoshima prefecture with a combined cast and crew of about 120 people. The shoot is expected to last 40 days and the film will be released by Gaga Communications in Japan sometime in 2010.
