Takashi Miike has signed on to direct a live-action film version of Buichi Terasawa’s digital manga, “Takeru”. The film is said to have a budget of $30m and producer Yoshiya Nagasawa is planning on setting up the film as a pan-Asian co-production with well-known actors from Korea, China, and Japan.
Takeru is set in a sci-fi fantasy world called Yamato, which is described as “an amalgam of feudal and futuristic Japan”. “Summoner of Spirit Worlds” and all-around bad boy Takeru uses his superhuman powers to protect and win over the woman he loves. According to Nagasawa, lots of green screen visuals will be used, but it’s Miike’s goal to make the resulting film as lifelike as possible.
Filming will take place after Miike is done shooting the recently announced Thirteen Assassins remake—around October 2010—and will most likely be released at the end of 2011.
