Takashi Miike is set to remake Eiichi Kudo's 1963 samurai film Thirteen Assassins (Jūsan-nin no Shikaku) for Toho and London-based HanWay Films. HanWay will be introducing buyers to the project at this year's Cannes Film Festival, while Toho will handle domestic theatrical distribution. The story involves thirteen assassins who embark on a suicide mission to kill an evil young Lord.
Miike will begin shooting the film in Japan this July, and it will be produced by Toshiaki Nakazawa of Sedic International and Jeremy Thomas of Recorded Picture Company. Nakazawa has a long history with Miike, working with him on both Young Thugs movies, The Bird People in China, Andromedia, Yakuza Demon, and Sukiyaki Western Django.
