Teaser up for Jae-young Kwak’s “Cyborg She”

The teaser is out for Cyborg She (Boku no Kanojo wa Cyborg), directed by Jae-young Kwak of “My Sassy Girl” fame. Even though production company Amuse hired a Korean director to head the project, this is an entirely Japanese movie and was filmed in Japan with a Japanese cast. Here’s the premise: One day a dull university named Jiro (Keisuke Koide) meets a cyborg from the future (Haruka Ayase). They begin to like each other, but since she can’t truly feel emotions he angrily tells her to leave. Eventually, an earthquake hits Tokyo and she saves Jiro’s life, fulfilling her purpose while also triggering unforeseeable events in the future timeline.

I have to admit I was expecting a bit more melodrama given the plot and the fact that the last cyborg love story I saw, Saikano: The Last Love Song on This Little Planet, was a complete sappy sob-fest. This one seems to have a bit of a tongue-in-cheek aspect to it, e.g., Jiro’s general goofiness and the obvious homage to the Terminator entrance.

Cyborg Girl will be released in Japan on May 31, 2008.
