It’s always a nice surprise when you discover a Japanese R2 DVD release will have English subtitles. Not only because we get to watch the movie months, if not years ahead of the normal turn-around, but because Japanese DVD releases are usually so much better than the treatments we get here in the US. The downside? They’re expensive as hell.
Japanese distributor Pony Canyon is big on offering English subs with their releases, and thankfully they’ve continued that trend with their release of Koki Mitani’s smash hit, The Magic Hour, due out December 3rd. There will be 3 versions: Standard Edition, Special Edition (standard disc + bonus features disc), and Blu-ray. See links below for specs.

Also, if you haven’t been paying attention to our DVD release schedule (RSS feed), there have been a few other notable R2 DVDs with English subs released or announced recently:
The Glory of Team Batista
Kekkon Shiyo yo
700 Days of Battle: Us vs. the Police
Fine, Totally Fine
Gachi Boy
Cyborg She
Shaolin Girl
Some notable releases that don’t have subs? “Cyborg She”, “The Chasing World”, and “Sushi King Goes to New York”. That’s cold.

And don’t forget, some kind soul in comments elsewhere on this site pointed out that smash festival hit Zenzen Daijoubu (aka Fine, Totally Fine) was released last week with english subs! Most retailers incorrectly list this as lacking english subs, but the studio’s site clearly indicates subs are included, and amazon.co.jp confirmed it via email.
All of Mitani Koki’s movies include subs on the R2 DVDs.
Ohh.. chalk me up as being one of the ones fooled by those listings. Thanks for confirming that
updated!
YesAsia ist listing CYBORG SHE with English subs, which is confirmed by the movies’ blog.

Nice! I’ve got another mystery.. Satoshi Miki’s “In the Pool”. I see ripped subs all over the place but I can’t find confirmation that any specific DVD release has them.
dunno. some stuff does get fansubbed, so wondering what clues suggest they’re ripped from an official release?
the main clue was the subtitle file was named DVD_VOLUME.Title1.DVDRip.. I suppose I could just buy the DVD and add the subtitles in a video player if it doesn’t have them
kinda tempted, but I’ve such a long list of interesting films, we’ll have to see how this stands out closer to the release date. I’d like the blu-ray.
