Yo Oizumi and Ryuhei Matsuda to star in “Tantei wa Bar ni Iru”

Yo Oizumi (37) and Ryuhei Matsuda (27) are set to co-star for the first time in an upcoming film called Tantei wa Bar ni Iru, directed by Hajime Hashimoto.

The film is based on the Naomi Azuma’s novel “Bar ni Kakatte Kita Denwa”, the second installment of his “Susukino Tantei” series. Oizumi’s character is a private detective in Susukino, a red-light district in Sapporo, Hokkaido. While at the bar he frequents, he receives a call from a woman identifying herself as “Kyoko Kondo” and soon finds himself saddled with a particularly dangerous case. He teams up with his partner Takada (Matsuda) and begins an investigation, gradually uncovering the truth behind two incidents.

Matsuda’s character is an agriculture department assistant at Hokkaido University and an expert in karate. He spends a lot of time sleeping and often fights with Oizumi’s character, but is always a reliable partner when the chips are down.

Because there are hopes that this could turn into an ongoing film series, picking a relatively young co-star was considered the most important prerequisite for casting. Matsuda was deemed the perfect choice both for his age and his career as a film actor.

Producer Yasushi Sato (Aibou) had been considering adapting “Susukino Tantei” since he first began reading it 16 years ago. Both he and Azuma are from Hokkaido, and he had his eye on Hokkaido native Oizumi over 8 years ago when he was on the popular TV variety series Suiyo Dodesho (How do you like wednesday?). However, it wasn’t until much later that their schedules matched up and they were able to begin planning.

Filming began in Hokkaido on February 17th and is expected to wrap by the end of March. A nation-wide release is planned for September 2011.
