Watashi no Yasashikunai SenpaiYutaka Yamamoto, the director of “The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya”, “Lucky Star”, and “Kannagi”, is set to make his first live-action feature film. Watashi no Yasashikunai Senpai (something like “my mean senior”) is based on a story written by novelist Akira while still in high school. It won the Renai Shousetsu (love novel) Contest in 2004 and was published by now-defunct Hekitensha in January of 2005.

The story is set on a remote island in the corner of Kyushi called Hitokage, where teenager Yamako Iriomote (Umika Kawashima) finds herself unable to confess her love for a certain upperclassman. She’s written countless drafts of a love letter meant for him, but ends up stuffing them away in her pocket. To make matters worse, a particularly obnoxious upperclassman (Satoshi Kanada) becomes aware of the love letter, and Yamako is forced to deal with him to avoid any further humiliation.

The cast also includes Jingi Irie, Kinuyo Kodama, Mei Nagano, Natsumi Ogawa, and Nobuhiko Takada.

“Watashi no Yasashikunai Senpai” is still in production and will be released by Phantom Film sometime in 2010.
