Gurren Lagann: The Movie - Crimson Chapter (Gekijo Ban Tengen Toppa Guren Ragan - Guren Hen) comes out in Japan this Saturday and since I know only slightly more than nothing about anime I’ll just translate the brief synopsis provided by MovieWalker:
In the distant future humankind has moved underground. Simon and Kamina know of the existence of the terrestrial world, so they board a mecha and start digging toward the surface. But they eventually discover a world dominated by a Spiral King, and he’s been waiting for them...
Here’s a direct link to the movie’s trailer (requires Windows Media Player).
This will be the first of two planned movies to cover the story.

Everyone’s favorite over-the-top, head-explode-y fighting series is back with a new movie focused entirely on the original main character, Kenshiro. The 5-part “Shin Kyuseishu Densetsu” series of “Fist of the North Star” movies started in 2005 and has included re-tellings of established events as well as in-depth coverage of subplots not previously covered by the original manga or anime releases/TV shows.

It suddenly occurred to me that prior to today I have never once written about an anime title on this site. Well, where better to start than from the beginning; and Vampire Hunter D was the first anime I ever watched. I’m guessing I was in junior high when I heard about some weird foreign vampire cartoon with a mix of gore and gratuitous nudity. Obviously I was fascinated, as any respectable 12-year-old would be, so I managed to get my hands on a VHS copy. Because I watched this at such an impressionable age it’s nearly impossible for me to step back and develop a new opinion from the perspective of an adult who’s seen a few hundred Japanese movies and animes. So instead of trying, I’m just going stick with my original wide-eyed, non-jaded perspective: this movie is totally badass.
