BD just posted a brief interview with Takashi Miike. Obviously the questions are pretty much all horror-specific, but since Miike doesn’t really consider himself a horror director per se, the majority of his answers are basically brief clarifications. [clicky!]

i found the part about how he never actually said he’d never direct horror again interesting.. it’s weird how those rumors bounce around. when you actually read his interviews he doesn’t seem like the type to ever rule anything out.

don’t really think he agrees with the idea of himself as a director of any particular genre. as with most of japanese film, it’s both easy to generalise it and difficult to then guarantee you can entirely pin down the pigeonhole you’ve always expected any given film to fit snuggly into. i don’t read interviews online, generally.
i always make a point of watching miike’s interviews in extras - the only time i usually do this - as i know he’s a lot smarter at describing what he does, the intentions behind it - than pretty much everyone else bar one or two who’re on a pretty similar page to the man himself. one thing i’ve always liked is that he states he never spends much (if any) time considering how he’ll shoot a scene in advance, so you kind of get what he feels appropriate as and when he gets to the moment he shoots it… this results in the massive mash-ups; best example is how ‘full metal yakuza’ goes from sci-fi, through comedy, to romance.

gives a good hint (reminder) at how daft it can be to follow one specific field or genre so closely; the perception is clearly hindered and clouded by the extreme elements, predictably so.
