Japanese distributor Gaga Communications will be releasing Bokutachi to Chuzai-san no 700-nichi Senso (roughly “our 700-day war with the police") on English-subtitled DVD in Japan on August 22, 2008. The movie, which I wrote about briefly here back in December, is a comedy based on a partially-fictional blog novel which was later adapted to manga in 2006.

Set in 1979, the story revolves around a local teenager—antagonistically nicknamed “Mamachari” for the girl’s bike he rides—who is the resident mastermind of pranks in his small, normally quiet town. Mamachari, played by Hayato Ichihara (God’s Puzzle, Check It Out, Yo!), leads a gang of high school pranksters who seem to always be able to find new ways to cause mischief.

One day the town’s Chuzai-san (local police officer) busts their friend Saijo (Takuya Ishida) for speeding on his scooter down a steep hill. With Saijo suspended from school for the incident, Mamachari plans some seemingly-harmless retaliation, but it backfires when the Chuzai-san gets them suspended from school for a few days. Later, when Mamachari and Saijo find out the Chuzai-san is married to a woman named Kanako (Kumiko Aso), they become even more determined to prank him just out of their own frustration that anyone as insufferable as him could possibly be married to someone so young and beautiful. But they underestimate this particular public servant’s immaturity, and each time they attempt a prank he finds a way to prank them back in humiliating ways. Eventually the prank war escalates until it gets totally out of hand and involves more and more of the town.

The DVD will be region 2, NTSC on 2 discs. Bonus disc includes spin-off prank special feature, trailers, music video for the movie’s theme “Tabidachi”, theatrical unveiling footage, making-of footage, and cast/staff bios. Main movie disc includes English subtitles and audio commentary. Available for preorder now at CDJapan.

i’d like to see this, but i’ve no idea how it went down or how well it turned out… can’t (yet) find any reviews in english - the trail to them is littered with stuff about the source material.

yeah, it’s tough to gage before the dvd comes out. yahoo! japan is where i go for a general public reaction to any movie since that seems to be the consensus site for user participation. they gave it 4.33 stars with lots of comments about how funny it was. they’re usually pretty tough on comedies.. cromartie high got 3.38, swing girls got 3.8, and the taste of tea got 3.82. it’s not much to go on but i’ll probably buy it anyway

i’ve seen another such site around. you can go round in circles very quickly trying to listen to other people’s opinions too much, but at least one review in english would be nice…
