Here are some DVD releases slated for the fairly distant future, but worth keeping tabs on nonetheless.
UK distributor Third Window Films has picked up the distribution rights to Yosuke Fujita’s Fine, Totally Fine (Zenzen Daijobu). The film won top honors at this year’s Nippon Connection Festival in Germany and the audience award at NYAFF 2008. No word yet on a release date but it will be screened at the Raindance Film Festival in October. Third Window is also planning to release Memories of Matsuko and Kamikaze Girls in January. Specs forthcoming.
Huge news for fans of dorky comedy. As Mack at Twitch reported yesterday, Synapse Films is releasing Minoru Kawasaki’s Executive Koala, The Rug Cop, and The World Sinks Except Japan on R1 DVD. We’ll have to wait until November to get our grubby paws on them though. Cover art below:
And finally, Japanese distributor Shochiku is pulling out all the stops to give Yoji Yamada’s classic Tora-san series the revamped DVD release it deserves. However, you may have to take out a second mortgage to afford the entire English-subtitled box set. There will be two separate versions. The 54-disc set comes packaged in a genuine leather suitcase and includes all 48 digitally-remastered Tora-san movies, a special edition, 5 bonus discs, a reduced-size press sheet, and 48 replica A8-sized movie posters. The 53-disc set will come in an paper suitcase-shaped box and includes the same 48 digitally-remastered Tora-san movies, a special edition, 4 bonus discs, and a reduced-size press sheet. Both boxes will be released at the end of October. The kicker? They cost about $1,740 and $1,375 USD respectively. For those of us who still have to worry about spending money on things like food and shelter, the individual discs will also be released separately over the next several months.
As always, keep an eye on our list of future releases and recent releases for specs, dates, plot synopses, and cover art. Or you could just subscribe to the related feed.

The Japanese DVD release of ZENZEN DAIJOBU (available August 29th) should have English (movie) subtitles for both editions (regular and special).

there’s also one kicking around which nobody is yet mentioning that we’ve been waiting on a release for since 2005 or so… i won’t give it away, not publicly, not yet. of course, there’s been a whole heap suddenly announced all over the place in snippets that we’ll have to wait a while for - more romanporno, more seijun suzuki, more nikkatsu action, more fukasaku, and ‘third window’ even seem to have another one from the director of another recently popular festival hit also.
