Minoru Kawasaki has been getting a lot of attention here and around the web for The Monster X Strikes Back / Attack the G8 Summit, his big-budget sci-fi comedy due out in July. But slightly under the radar right now is his upcoming hair-styling fantasy Kamigakari. The story of Kamigakari involves a hair stylist (Mari Natsuki) with seemingly magical powers who welcomes customers into her shop, only to have them fall asleep in her chair. When they wake up they discover their hair has been completely transformed into a bizarre new style. They're initially shocked when they see themselves, but she tells them how amazing they look with complete self-confidence and her approving smile somehow causes them to accept the change, and even change their lives.
The title Kamigakari is sort of a play on words. Kami is the word for hair as well as god, but they are spelled with difference kanji characters. Kamigakari is a term normally spelled with the kanji character for god, and means to be possessed by a divine spirit. The title of the film uses the kanji character for hair instead of god, since in a way the characters are being influenced by their new hairstyles to change their lives.
Starring alongside Natsuki are Maho Nonami, Kazuki Kato, and Mao Miyaji. Kamigakari will be in Japanese theaters on May 31st.
edit: A new trailer went live two days after I posted this. Not quite as wacky as we're used to from Kawasaki, but interesting nonetheless. Check it out:
