Utatama poster Earlier today an announcement was posted on the website for Makoto Tanaka’s upcoming comedy Utatama that the film will be released on April 5th. For those who haven’t been following the project, Utatama has been marketed as sort of a torchbearer for the recent string of megahit feel-good zero-to-hero comedies like Waterboys, Swing Girls, and Hula Girls. This time around the subject is a school choir lead by the mildly uptight perfectionist Kasumi (Kaho).

One day the exceedingly cool class president (Hideo Ishiguro) takes some pictures of the choir during a performance and when he shows Kasumi some of his work, he amusedly points out that her facial expression while singing looks remarkably like a spawning salmon. Although meant as an innocuous comment, Kasumi takes it really hard and wonders if she can continue singing if that’s the face she makes. She decides to quit the choir, but eventually she runs into a gang of choral thugs from River High and their leader (Sayuri Iwata) teaches her that it doesn’t matter how you look when you sing as long as you have soul.

Here is the original teaser and a brand new full trailer to go with it:
