The teaser is out for Cyborg She (Boku no Kanojo wa Cyborg), directed by Jae-young Kwak of “My Sassy Girl” fame. Even though production company Amuse hired a Korean director to head the project, this is an entirely Japanese movie and was filmed in Japan with a Japanese cast. Here’s the premise: One day a dull university named Jiro (Keisuke Koide) meets a cyborg from the future (Haruka Ayase). They start to like each other, but since she can’t truly feel emotions he decides he has to leave her. Eventually, an earthquake hits Tokyo and she saves Jiro’s life, predictably discovering she really is capable of emotions after all.
I have to admit I was expecting a bit more melodrama given the plot and the fact that the last cyborg love story I saw, The Last Love Song on This Little Planet, was a complete sappy sob-fest. This one seems to have a bit of a tongue-in-cheek aspect to it, e.g., Jiro’s general goofiness and the obvious homage to the Terminator entrance.
Cyborg She will be released in Japan on May 31st.
