Everyone’s favorite over-the-top, head-explode-y fighting series is back with a new movie focused entirely on the original main character, Kenshiro. The 5-part “Shin Kyuseishu Densetsu” series of “Fist of the North Star” movies started in 2005 and has included re-tellings of established events as well as in-depth coverage of subplots not previously covered by the original manga or anime releases/TV shows.
Kenshiro’s installment, Fist of the North Star Zero: The Legend of Kenshiro (Hokuto no Ken Zero: Kenshiro Den), will involve events that occurred before the original manga. Much of this material was covered in the oft-maligned 1986 theatrical release, but this version promises to tell new parts of the story that have remained a mystery until now. In the story Kenshiro is the successor of the “Hokuto Shinken” fighting style (basically, he punches people and they implode). He is defeated by his former best friend and “Nanto Koshuken” practitioner Shin, who subsequently steals his lover Yuria. Kenshiro is left for dead in the ground with 7 scars on his chest, but none worse than the scar of defeat left in his heart. Kenshiro returns one year later during a huge wave of violence and is labeled a savior: the god of death. In truth it’s Yuria’s undying love that enabled him to return from the ground. Now the true story of Kenshiro will be told.
Here’s the trailer:
“Zero: The Legend of Kenshiro” opens on October 4th at Baus Theater with a nation-wide road show planned for October 11th.
