To be honest I’m a bit wary of even mentioning Toshikazu Nagae’s latest attempt at horror, Hoso Kinshi Gekijo Ban because the first attempt: “Ghost System” was one of my least favorite movies of all time. And yet, girls in blank masks are kind of creepy, so here goes. In 2003 Fuji TV started airing a series of documentaries called “Hoso Kinshi” (banned from broadcast) late at night about creepy events as told to the interviewer by the people who were supposedly involved. They were staged to seem as real as possible so it caused a lot of confusion that got people talking and all that buzz just ended up making it more popular.
Now Nagae is trying to adapt that same vibe to a feature film, full title: “Hoso Kinshi Gekijo Ban: Micchaku 68-nichi Fukushu Shikkoujin” (something like “Banned From Broadcast: The Movie - Documenting 68 Days of Revenge"). In the movie version a reporter finds out about a mysterious website called “Cielo” that offers a pay service to get revenge for people. Think of it as Bob Saget’s Dirty Work but with more brutal violence and death. The reporter tracks down the proprietor of the site, a strange woman named Nora Shichikawa who wears a creepy white mask and captures some of her handiwork with his digital camera as he slowly discovers more about her nature.
