Based on a true story and written with the aid of official courtroom transcripts, Best Wishes for Tomorrow (Ashita e no Yuigon) recounts the trial of Lieutenant General Tasuku Okada for class B war crimes. Three months before the end of World War II, Okada ordered the execution of 38 American POWs responsible for the carpet bombing of Nagoya. Makoto Fujita plays the general during his trial as his reasoning is explained in detail and he ultimately takes responsibility for his actions. The film delves into his personal relationships and brings up questions about accountability—both his own and that of the US—and explores what a war crime really is. Region 2, NTSC.
