DVD release - Black Rain (AnimEigo) available on October 20, 2009

US distributor AnimEigo will be releasing Shohei Imamura’s Black Rain (Kuroi Ame, 1989) on region 1 DVD this October.

Plot: Five years after the atomic bomb hit Hiroshima, Mr and Mrs. Shizuma are desperately trying to find a husband for their niece Yasuko (Yoshiko Tanaka), but she keeps being rejected due to her having been caught in the “black rain” fallout and the possibility that she may succumb to radiation sickness one day like many of her friends and family. Over time her prospects for finding any man to marry her dwindle and she befriends a man named Yuichi (Keisuke Ishida) who suffers from severe post-traumatic stress disorder.

Region 1, NTSC, black & white. Japanese audio with English subtitles. Features include alternate ending (in color), interviews (Yoshiko Tanaka and Assistant Director Takashi Miike), program notes, and trailers.
