Yuji Nimura (Joe Odagiri) is a young man in his 20s with no real direction in life. One night his defacto mentor Mamoru (Tadanobu Asano) murders their boss and his wife, possibly to preempt the emotional Yuji from doing it himself. With Mamoru’s guidance from prison, Nimura acclimates a poisonous red jellyfish to fresh water and releases it in the rivers of Tokyo. With that goal accomplished and Nimura clinging to the trappings of his juvenile life, Mamoru hangs himself, his final message to Nimura: “go”. Left with nobody else to lean on, it’s finally time for Yuji to break free from the expectations of the older generation and make the bright future he’s always dreamed about a reality. Region 1, NTSC, anamorphic, Japanese audio with English subtitles. Disc includes “Ambivalent Future” documentary (75 mins.) and trailers.
