Drunken Angel

In Drunken Angel (Yoidore Tenshi, 1948), a gangster gets treated by an alcoholic doctor after getting injured in a fight with his rivals. After being diagnosed with tuberculosis, he reluctantly agrees to receive treatment for his condition. His old boss is soon released from prison and re-takes his rightful position as leader, bumping the young man back down to the status of rank and file gangster. His old boss ridicules him, forcing a final deadly confrontation between the two men.

Region 1, NTSC, full screen aspect ratio, black & white, DVD-9. Japanese audio with English subtitles. Features include audio commentary by Donald Richie, making-of (30 min.), and featurette on Kurosawa’s challenge directing the film. Also included: collectible booklet.
