Grotesque cover art

UK distributor 4Digital Asia will be releasing Koji Shiraishi‘s Grotesque on region 2 DVD with English subtitles in September. I first wrote about this one back in January, but it’s basically a victim-butchering torture flick that’s unapologetically derivative of Eli Roth’s 2005 film “Hostel” with an added layer of parody (hence calling the only version the “Unrated” version).

The film stars AV actress Tsugumi Nagasawa and Hiroaki Kawatsure as a young couple that get abducted by a perverse sadist named Tachikawa (Shigeo Osako) who ties them both up in his basement and begins mutilating their bodies in unspeakable ways as the other looks on helplessly. If either of them happens to pass out from the intense pain, he revives them with smelling salts before going back to work.

Region 2, PAL, 73 min. Japanese audio with English subtitles. Features TBA

Thanks to logboy for the tip.

Update: Grotesque was slated for release in the UK on September 21, 2009, but has since been banned by the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) on the grounds that giving it a rating would involve a ''risk of harm'' to those viewing it.

“it’s basically just a straight-forward victim-butchering torture flick unapologetically derivative of Eli Roth’s 2005 film “Hostel”

not really “JUST”...from my point of view there is a second level of reading. The title of the movie and the final scene should give you a hint… And Shiraishi Koji would have not just done a simple copy of HOSTEL…

of course it’s a difficult movie, but it’s not as simple as it seems…

You have more faith in the man than I do when it comes to simplistic filmmaking, but the point is well taken.

Modified the description a bit for clarification.

I have faith in the man after Noroi. Seriously, that was one of the scariest experiences I’ve had, with a really interesting story and a final twist.

Everytime I see this poster, I think it’s for the U.S. adaptation of Natsuo Kirino’s novel (of which I can no longer find information on), which it obviously isn’t.

Which reminds me, has anyone seen the Japanese adaptation of her novel OUT? I’ve heard it’s pretty limp,  but I’m curious to see it anyway.

actually,if you want to find a reference, don’t think of the HOSTEL or SAW fims. Go back in 1985-86 and remember the two GUINEA PIG films (THE DEVIL’S EXPERIMENT & FLOWER OF FLESH AND BLOOD). GROTESQUE pays hommage to/copies scenes from FLOWER OF FLESH AND BLOOD (kidnapping scene, eyeball violence scene, arm mutilation & the finale decapitation).

BBFC have now denied giving this a certificate so it looks like it won’t be released R2

well, judging from the above comments, these bans will help the film to get the desired ‘video nasty’ status, just like its role-models got it once upon a time (DEVIL’S EXPERIMENT,FLOWER OF FLESH & BLOOD). Damn good selling point! You can be sure this film was never aimed at Cannes… Just made to sell well in the DVD market. And it will sell well, indeed. First the japanese DVD and the UK/USA DVD that will be released a few years later ( when censors will be even more ‘relaxed’)...

Well you buy the original Japanese version from YesAsia, but it won’t have any subtitles.
