In Hideaki Anno‘s debut anime movie, Gunbuster (Top wo Nerae!, 1988), a young girl named Noriko Takaya enrolls in a school for space pilots in an attempt to follow in her father’s footsteps, but soon finds herself in control of of a Gunbuster mech—and on the front lines of Earth’s war against gigantic rampaging aliens.
