Japanese distributor Pony Canyon will be releasing Michael Arias’s Heaven’s Door on Blu-ray, Standard Edition DVD, and Limited Edition DVD with English subtitles in July. The film was released in Japan on February 7, 2009 and was the first live-action project for Arias, who’s best known for breaking into Japanese anime industry as a foreigner with his debut, Tekkon Kinkreet.
A slightly modified remake of the 1997 German film “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door”, Arias’s version revolves around two terminally ill patients: 28-year-old Masato (Tomoya Nagase) and 14-year-old Harumi (Mayuko Fukuda) who decide to escape from the hospital, steal a fancy convertible from the parking lot, and go on a wild final adventure. Various stars pop up along the way, like Anna Tsuchiya and Yumi of Puffy AmiYumi.
Region-free Blu-ray, NTSC, 1080p, 2 discs. Japanese PCM 5.1 and Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio tracks with selectable Japanese and English subtitles (main movie only). Bonus features on separate disc. Blu-ray release includes:
