In Man Walking on Snow (Aruku, Hito, 2001), indie director Masahiro Kobayashi (Closing Time, Bashing) explores his own relationship with his father growing up in Hokkaido. Nobuo Honma (Ken Ogata) is an elderly man who lives in a small town with his son Yasuo (Yasufumi Hayashi). His wife died recently, so to pass the time, he treks through the snow every day to observe fish at a breeding center located in the mountains. Ailing and aware that he probably doesn’t have much time left in life, Nobuo wants his son Ryoichi (Teruyuki Kagawa) to return home for the 2-year anniversary of his wife’s death in the hopes of putting their past differences aside. Instead, the reunion turns sour as old feelings come bubbling to the surface.
