In NN-891102 (1999), which is shorthand for the atomic bombing of Nagasaki which occurred at 11:02 on August 9, 1945, director Go Shibata weaves the haunting tale of a survivor of the bombing and his unusual obsession. Only 5 years old at the time of the bombing, a young man still has a recording he made on his father’s tape recorder at the time of the blast. The sound still frightens him, but over time he begins to find it strangely comforting. Eventually he decides to dedicate his life to finding a way to recreate that sound.
