In Ring 0: Birthday Yukie Nakama plays a college-age version of Sadako before she became a vengeful murderous spirit. Sadako is shy and withdrawn, but still decides to join her school’s drama club. The director thinks she has potential and gives her extra attention, but this causes her classmates to get jealous. Meanwhile a reporter who has been investigating Sadako’s mother starts to suspect something evil about Sadako and arrives just as a string of deaths begin occurring around Sadako’s drama club.

Rasen: The Spiral was Joji Iida‘s 1998 sequel to Hideo Nakata‘s “Ring” and came out before Nakata made his own alternate sequel, “Ring 2” the following year. Iida’s version begins as the corpse of Ryuji Takayama (Hiroyuki Sanada) is being examined by his friend, pathologist Dr. Ando (Koichi Sato) who attempts to figure out the cause of the mysterious death. His investigation eventually leads him to the cursed videotape. Severely depressed about the death of his own son and convinced the ghost of Ryuji is guiding him, Ando watches the videotape himself. However, it turns out the evil spirit of Sadako has been manipulating him all along and has big plans in store.
