Well Go USA seems to be bargain shopping for cheap, silly J-films lately. Following up their DVD release of the forgettable Geisha Assassin, they’ll be releasing Kotaro Terauchi’s Shaolin Grandma (Shaolin Baba, 2008) this July. Odd choice considering it’s actually a spoof of the much-hyped Stephen Chow-produced box office dud Shaolin Girl, which will most likely never see a North American DVD release itself.
Plot: Miyoki (Chiyoko Asami), aka Shaolin Grandma, has spent many years practicing martial arts at the remote Shaolinji Temple, but is forced to leave when she suffers a humiliating defeat at the hands of her arch rival, the young and pretty Ippon-ashi (Nao Nagasawa). With the company of her two dimwitted apprentices, she finds her way to a town where they make a living as lewd street performers. Actually starting to enjoy her new life, as well as losing the virtues of her former temple life, Miyoki begins a career as a dancer at local adult clubs. But she still has a grudge to settle, and must challenge Ippon-ashi before she loses her will to fight.
Region 1, NTSC, 16:9 anamorphic widescreen. Japanese Dolby 5.1 audio with English subtitles. Disc includes theatrical trailer.
Mark Pollard at Kung Fu Cinema has already posted a review, giving the film a rating of 2/10.
