Director Takashi Miike’s take on Kinji Fukasaku’s 1975 film, Graveyard of Honor, is based on the true story of Rikuo Ishimatsu, a dishwasher named Ishimatsu (Goro Kishitani) who unwittingly saves the life of a yakuza boss and ends up being recruited into the man’s gang. As a gangster his tactics are swift and merciless, but ultimately lead him into prison. Five years later he gets released and attempts to rejoin his gang as before. However, a simple altercation leads to violence and an eventual bloodbath.
