In Hideo Gosha’s The Geisha (Yokiro, 1983), a man named Ohta (Ken Ogata) sells his 12-year-old daughter Momokawa (Kimiko Ikegami) to a highly successful geisha house. Once within the castle walls, she’s forced to grow up quickly in an environment built on female egos and vicious competition. She eventually works her way to the becoming top geisha, but not without a lot of conflict with her father, clients, and the local yakuza.
