Taiwan-based distributor Double Edge Entertainment will be releasing Kankuro Kudo’s 2008 film The Shonen Merikensack on region 3 DVD in October.
Plot: On the verge of losing her job—though not exactly dreading the prospect—record company employee Kanna (Aoi Miyazaki) discovers video footage of an incredibly noisy, rude punk rock band called “Shonen Merikensack” (Brass Knuckle Boys) on the internet. Horrified, but fully prepared to take her leave of the company to work at her dad’s sushi shop, Kanna presents the eardrum-shattering clip to her boss. Surprisingly, he loves it! A former punk rocker himself, he sends her on a quest to sign this revolutionary band at all costs. Unfortunately, she realizes too late that the clip was actually from the early 80s and the group is now a bunch of crusty old rockers who haven’t picked up their instruments in years. Worse still, the bassist Akio (Koichi Sato) doesn’t get along with the guitarist, his brother Haruo (Yuichi Kimura), and the lead singer Jimmy (Tomorowo Taguchi) is practically catatonic from a traumatic brain injury. Can Kanna help them recapture their punk rock spirit and re-learn how to play together, all while keeping their ages a secret from her boss? Probably not, but there’s always sushi to fall back on…
Region 3, NTSC, 16:9 anamorphic widescreen, DVD-5. Japanese stereo and Dolby 5.1 audio tracks with English and traditional Chinese subtitles.
