Set in 1923 in a low-rent boarding house in Tokyo, The Watcher in the Attic (Edogawa Rampo Ryoki-kan: Yaneura no Sanpo-sha,  1976) follows the exploits of the sleazy tenant who peeps on his neighbors through holes in the ceiling from the attic, spying on their most most intimate and occasionally bizarre private moments. When he witnesses a woman murder her lover in the heat of passion, he realizes that he has found his soulmate, as he too has had murderous impulses. Spurred on by her example, he concocts a plan to poison a particularly judgmental priest from the safety of his attic perch. Based on two compelling short stories by Edogawa Rampo, “The Watcher in the Attic” and “The Chair”.

Region 1, NTSC, anamorphic widescreen, uncut, DVD-9. Features include notes about the film and Nikkatsu; documentary: “The Erotic Empire” (24 min.); Jasper Sharp interview regarding “The Watcher in the Attic”; and 5 Nikkatsu Roman Porno trailers.
