The Book of the Dead

Kihachiro Kawamoto‘s 2005 stop-motion animation set in the Nara period. A woman named Iratsume completely devotes herself to Buddhism, which has recently been imported from China. The strength of this devotion eventually leads her to a temple where she sees the ghost of Prince Otsu, who mistakes her for one of her ancestors. The ghost becomes obsessed with Iratsume and starts visiting her every night. Iratsume begins weaving a Buddhist shroud for the prince’s body in hopes that the strength of her religion will save them both.
