US distributor E1 Entertainment will finally be releasing Kiyoshi Kurosawa's critically lauded 2008 film Tokyo Sonata on R1 DVD this May, and the specs have been released. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear as though a Blu-ray version will accompany it as was hinted by the initial Amazon listings a few months back. On the bright side, the UK Blu-ray by Eureka Entertainment is region-free and very high quality.
Synopsis: When family patriarch Ryuhei Sasaki (Teruyuki Kagawa) loses his job, he doesn't tell his family what happened. Instead, he leaves his home each morning, briefcase in hand, and fruitlessly searches for a new job. As the situation goes on and stress begins to mount, his once-normal family unit begins to deteriorate. Winner of the 2008 Un Certain Regard Jury Prize at Cannes.
DVD Specs: Region 1, NTSC, anamorphic widescreen, 119 min. Japanese Dolby 5.1 audio with English subtitles. Features include making-of featurette, Cannes Film Festival footage, panel discussion, and interviews.
