A Lone Scalpel is a Japanese movie directed by Izuru Narushima and based on a novel by practicing doctor Toshihiko Oogane. It premiered at the Yubari International Fantastic Film Festival on February 26, 2010 and was released by Toei in Japan on June 5, 2010.
Set in 1989, the film stars Shinichi Tsutsumi as a highly skilled surgeon named Toma who was trained in the United States. Now practicing in a Shiga Prefecture hospital that can barely afford to conduct basic surgery, Toma is forced to improvise in ways that go directly against medical guidelines and legal restrictions. Dedicated to always putting the patient first, he breaks the law by attempting a liver transplant from a deceased donor in one emergency case.
