Honokaa Boy is a Japanese movie directed by longtime television commercial director Atsushi Sanada. It premiered at the People’s Theatre in Honokaa, Hawaii on February 22, 2009—the same theater that’s featured in the film. Toho released it in Japan on March 14, 2009.
Masaki Okada stars as Leo, a Japanese tourist in Hawaii who gets dumped by his girlfriend and decides to stay in Honokaa for a while. While there, he gets a job at the local theater as a projectionist and meets a quirky old woman named Bee (Chieko Baisho). The two strike up a friendship and she begins cooking him meals every day.
