My Darling is a Foreigner (2010)

My Darling is a Foreigner is a Japanese movie directed by Kazuaki Ue. It’s based on an autobiographical manga by Saori Oguri about her relationship with American journalist Tony Laszlo. It was released by Toho in Japan on April 10, 2010.

In the film, illustrator Saori (Mao Inoue) is an aspiring manga artist who meets an American named Tony (Jonathan Sherr) who has traveled to Japan after becoming fascinated by the Japanese language.

A romance sparks between the two, but Tony’s incessant questions about Japanese phrasing and speech soon begin to annoy Saori. She begins to wonder if he’s like this because he’s a foreigner, or simply because he’s a language nerd.

Problems arise when Saori’s father (Jun Kunimura) disapproves of their relationship. Meanwhile, misunderstandings brought on by Saori’s weak comprehension of English cause additional friction between the couple as they struggle to keep their relationship intact in spite of their differences.
