Eli, Eli, Lema Sabachthani? (2005)

Eli, Eli, Lema Sabachthani? is a Japanese movie written and directed by Shinji Aoyama. It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on May 18, 2005 and was released domestically by Phantom Film on January 28, 2006.

The film is set in the year 2015 when Japan has been stricken with a rampant disease called “Lemming Syndrome” which causes people to become suicidal. Because of this, the population has dropped rapidly and there doesn’t seem to be any end in sight.

Two musicians, Mizui (Tadanobu Asano) and Asuhara (Masaya Nakahara), decide to get out of the diseased area and move to the country. However, a wealthy businessman manages to track them down and begs for their help in ridding his daughter (Aoi Miyazaki) of Lemming Syndrome, thinking that music is the cure to end this plague.
