Versus (2000)

Versus is a Japanese action film written and directed by Ryuhei Kitamura. It’s considered a sequel to his 1997 film, Down to Hell, but the two films are generally unrelated other than being set in “The Forest of Resurrection”. It premiered at the Tokyo International Fantastic Film Festival on October 29, 2000 and opened publicly in Japan on September 7, 2001.

The film stars Tak Sakaguchi as an escaped prisoner who meets up with a group of yakuza at a forest with the power to raise the dead as zombies. He has no memory of his past, but he has an uncanny ability to fight. After dispatching waves of zombies, including several “boss” zombies with super strength and abilities, he faces off against a longtime rival (Hideo Sakaki) and finally regains all memory of who he really is.
