Here’s the trailer for Daisuke Miura’s Boys on the Run, a live-action adaptation of Kengo Hanazawa’s manga which was serialized in Shogakukan’s Big Comic Spirits from 2005-2008. Judging from the trailer and what little I’ve read, it seems to be pretty damn loyal to the source material.
Plot: Tanishi (Kazunobu Mineta) is a meek 29-year-old vending machine prize salesman who spends most of his time watching porn videos in his parent’s house or obsessing over his coworker, Chiharu (Mei Kurokawa). After finally getting a chance to hang out with her, he winds up in a compromising position with her neighbor, a call girl named Shiho (YOU), and ruins any chance he had at a relationship. After that, his willingness to do anything to win her back—even if it’s completely stupid or life-threatening—sparks a fierce rivalry with a competing salesman named Aoyama (Ryuhei Matsuda) and eventually leads to him taking up boxing.
Phantom Film will be releasing “Boys on the Run” in Japan on January 30, 2010.
