Koji Wakamatsu’s official website has been updated with a new trailer for Caterpillar, complete with footage from the recent Berlin International Film Festival where Shinobu Terajima took home the Silver Bear award for best actress.

The film was inspired by the premise of Edogawa Rampo’s 1929 story “Imomushi”, but the time period and themes explored are completely different. The story is set during the Second Sino-Japanese War as a highly-decorated war hero named Lieutenant Kurokawa (Shima Onishi) returns home after losing his limbs in battle. His wife Shigeko (Terajima) is horrified by his disfigured appearance, but her family and neighbors expect her to honor the Emperor by caring for the “god soldier” and becoming a symbol of their fervent nationalism.

“Caterpillar” will be released in Okinawa on June 19th, Hiroshima on August 6th, Nagasaki on August 9th, and everywhere else in Japan on August 14, 2010.
