Plot: After spending all his money on a new cello, Daigo Kobayashi (Masahiro Motoki) is crushed by the breakup of his Tokyo orchestra. Defeated, he’s forced to return home with his wife Mika (Ryoko Hirosue) and responds to an ad for what appears to be a cushy job with a travel agency. To his surprise, a job with “Departures” actually involves preparing dead bodies for their eventual cremation. With no other prospects and the allure of a steady paycheck at the forefront of his mind, Daigo ends up taking the job. Initially too ashamed to tell Mika the truth about his new job, Daigo eventually discovers he may have found his true calling.
