A new English-subtitled trailer for Go Shibata’s Doman Seman has been released just in time for the World Premiere of the film at this year’s New York Asian Film Festival on July 5. The original cut actually premiered at Tokyo FILMeX back in November, but has since been completely re-edited.

The story contains a lot of bizarre elements and symbolism, so it’s kind of difficult to describe in a blurb. The original Japanese synopsis claims that Shibata was inspired by the works of David Lynch and Alejandro Jodorowsky to create a world of “magical realism”. Set in Kyoto, the film revolves around a shikigami (summoned magical spirit) who presents himself as yakuza magician named Mr. Abe as he does battle against the evil and greed of modern society. Aided by an army of psychic children, he enlists the help of a lazy mooch named Shinsuke and a homeless hallucinogenic mushroom addict named Tsutomu. He tasks them with tracking down a man named Terada who murdered the staff of a personal loan company as a teenager and seems to attract dark energy.
