The full trailer is finally out for Koji Yakusho’s directorial debut, Toad’s Oil, though it’s still pretty short at a little over a minute.
Plot: Takuya (Eita) is seriously injured in a car accident while returning from a date with his girlfriend Hikari (Fumi Nikaido). Around the same time, his juvenile delinquent friend Saburo (Junichi Sawayashiki) is released from a boys’ reformatory. Takuya is taken to the hospital and it’s discovered that he’s fallen into a coma.
His day-trading father Takuro (Yakusho) and his mother (Satomi Kobayashi) are at a loss as to what to do, but they decide to take Saburo in. Several days later Hikari calls for Takuya, completely unaware of what’s happened to him. Takuro is unable to tell her the truth, so he picks up the phone and pretends to be Takuya.
Later, Takuro goes on an emotional road trip as his mind wanders back to a toad’s oil salesman he once met as a child.
Distributor Phantom Film will be releasing Toad’s Oil in Japan on June 6, 2009.
