When the live-action adaptation of Rieko Saibara‘s 2006 picture book, Ikechan to Boku was announced at a recent press conference, a brief bit of footage was released to media outlets to show off Yu Aoi‘s voice acting talents. Now we have a real teaser to go with it. And if you’re wondering why it’s not laden with pop music and crazy CGI-infused adventures, it’s because this isn’t really a kid’s movie, per se; it’s a metaphor for motherhood.
Plot: For as long as he can remember, Toshio (Arashi Fukasawa) has had a mysterious blob-like companion named Ikechan (Aoi) watching over him. When Ikechan is happy, she multiples; when she’s troubled, she shrinks; and when he becomes friendly with girls she turns red and starts getting angry. Throughout their time together Ikechan sticks up for Toshio when he’s bullied, and the two of them fight when she becomes too smothering for his liking. Then one day when Toshio is older and has experienced his first love, Ikechan vanishes from his sight.
