Long-time commercial director Daihachi Yoshida made quite a splash in 2007 with his theatrical debut, Funuke Show Some Love, You Losers!, a multi-layered black comedy about the secrets families keep—both from outsiders and from each other. Now he’s following up that success with the “unconventional human drama”, Kuhio Taiso. Based on Kazumasa Yoshida’s 2006 novel “Kekkon Sagishi Kuhio Taisa” (literally “Marriage Swindler: Captain Kuhio”), the plot revolves around a con artist (Masato Sakai) who poses as an American military pilot to woo three women (Yasuko Matsuyuki, Yuko Nakamura, and Hikari Mitsushima) and bilk them out of a combined 100 million yen.
If this scenario sounds vaguely familiar, it may be because the awesomely absurd Richard Sagawa character in Takashi Miike’s The Happiness of the Katakuris was modeled after the same real-life swindler who scammed women between 1970 and the 1990s.
Sakura Ando, Masaaki Uchino, Hirofumi Arai, and Kazuya Kojima round out the eclectic cast.
Distributor Showgate will be releasing Kuhio Taisa in theaters later this year.
