Gotta love this time of year. Japan Society has uploaded an English-subtitled trailer For Sion Sono‘s Love Exposure to their YouTube channel in preparation for its NY premiere. The film will be co-presented by Japan Cuts and the New York Asian Film Festival on July 3rd and 7th.

Plot: Having grown up in a devout Christian family, Yu (Takahiro Nishijima) has always been a well-behaved kid. After his mother dies, his priest father is seduced by a woman who breaks his heart, causing him to torment Yu by forcing him to confess his sins on a daily basis. Of course, being a fairly normal kid, Yu has no legitimate sins to confess. To appease his increasingly demanding father, Yu is determined to become a true sinner, eventually training to become an expert at sneak upskirt photography. Pornography being the one sin no priest can overlook, Yu gets the attention he’s been so desperately seeking from his dad.

One day while hanging out with his fellow sinner pals—but dressed like Sasori as punishment for being on the losing end of a bet—Yu meets a beautiful girl named Yoko (Hikari Mitsushima). Their first meeting is a glorious one, beginning with an all-out street brawl and ending with a kiss. There are only two problems: she thinks he’s a woman and a devious cult leader named Aya (Sakura Ando) is carefully manipulating both of their lives.

goodness. this trailer has given me a whole different expectation of this film. i thought it was all fun and panties - now i can feel the same moralistic undertone i discovered during noriko’s dinner table.

at nearly four hours long, it may seem like love exposure is NEVER going to end, but now that i’ve seen this (trailer) , i may not want it to.

It’s fun and panties too! It’s really hard to sum up the movie in a few paragraphs because there’s so much going on and it’s cut into chapters that completely change tone.

Holy shit, that looks amazing. Can’t wait to see this. Hopefully I won’t have to wait until a subtitled DVD comes out; the film would be perfect for Montreal’s Fantasia festival in July.
